Using the Drawing Tools Tool Bar

Selecting the "Open Drawing Toolbar" menu item from the "Bubble Chart" menu causes a toolbar of drawing tools to appear at the top of the screen. The drawing tools are pictured below. 

Selecting a Drawing Tool: To draw an object, you must first select a tool from the Tool palette. Selecting a tool activates it for drawing, and the background color of the activated tool will turn darken.

To draw all objects:

  1. Hold the mouse button down in the drawing area and begin to drag the cursor.
  2. Drag the mouse to finish drawing the object.
  3. Release the mouse button and move the cursor to finish drawing the object. The selected tool is returned to the cursor in the Drawing Toolbar.

Deleting Individual Drawings:

To delete an individual drawing:

  1. Select the drawing by clicking and holding the mouse down on it for a moment. A red frame will appear around the selected object.
  2. Press the keyboard [Delete] key (Backspace on the Macintosh).

Deleting All Drawings:

To delete all drawings:

  1. Bring the bubble chart to the front.
  2. Click the [Show Drawings] radio button in the toolbar. The [Delete All Drawings] button will not be enabled unless the [Show Drawings] radio button is selected.
  3. Click the [Delete All Drawings] button. You will be prompted to confirm or cancel the deletion.

Moving Individual Objects:

To move an object:

  1. Select the drawing by clicking and holding the mouse down on it for a moment. A red frame will appear around the selected object.
  2. Click on or inside the object again, and hold the mouse down while moving the object. The "Handles" on the red frame will disappear indicating the object is being moved.
  3. Release and move the mouse button to drop the object at your desired location.
  4. You can also move or nudge a selected object using the "Arrow" keys.

Resizing Individual Objects:

To move an object:

  1. Select the drawing by clicking and holding the mouse down on it for a moment. For Ovals and Circles, a rectangular red frame with "Handles" will appear around the selected object. For lines, red circles will appear at each end of the line. (Note: polygons cannot be re-sized.)
  2. Click and hold the mouse button down on the handle on the edge that you want to resize, and drag the handle with the mouse down to resize the object.
  3. Release and move the mouse button to complete the resizing.
  4. Note: When resizing lines with arrow heads on the ends, the arrows will disappear during the resizing operation and reappear when the operation is complete.

Drawing Tool Icons

Text Tool Icon: This is used for placing short (less than 255 character) notes on the chart. Select the Text Tool by clicking on it. Move the cursor to point in the chart area where you want to start the text and click and hold down the mouse for a moment. The Enter Text form will be displayed. Enter the text in the field and click [Save]. The text will appear on the chart. Once placed on the chart, the text cannot be edited, but it can be moved like any other object.

Text Box Example:

Line Tool Icon: To use the Line Tool, click on the Line icon. Move the cursor to where you want the line to begin. Hold the mouse button down as you drag the line to where you want the it to end, and release the mouse button and move the cursor. The line color can be selected from the Line Color color palette, and the Line End mark (single arrow, double arrow, and plain) can be selected from the Arrows palette. The color and line preferences must be selected before you draw the line. You can also set the line thickness in the Preferences form on the “Drawing Preferences” page.

Rectangle Tool Icon: To use the Rectangle Tool, click on the Rectangle icon. Move the cursor to where you want the rectangle to begin. Hold the mouse button down as you drag the rectangle diagonally to where you want the opposite corner to be placed. Release the mouse button and move the cursor slightly. The rectangle line color can be selected from the Line Color color palette and rectangle line thickness can also be set in the drawing toolbar. The color and line preferences must be selected before you draw the rectangle.

Oval Tool Icon: To use the Oval Tool, click on the Oval icon. Move the cursor tho where you want the oval to begin. Hold the mouse button down as you drag the oval diagonally to where you want the it to end, and release the mouse button. The oval line color can be selected from the Line Color color button and oval line thickness can also be set in the drawing toolbar. The color and line preferences must be selected before you draw the oval.

Free-Hand Tool Icon: The Free-Hand Polygon tool allows you to draw Free-Hand polygons. To use the Free-Hand Polygon tool, click on the Free-Hand Polygon icon. Move the cursor to point in the Chart area where you want to start the polygon, hold the mouse button down as you drag the cursor around the  chart to where you want the polygon to end and release the mouse button. The polygon line color can be selected from the Line Color color palette and polygon line thickness can also be set in the drawing toolbar. The color and line preferences must be selected before you draw the polygon.

Cursor: Drawing is disabled.

Drawing Tools Palettes and Buttons

Line Color Palette: Click on the colored square to display a drop-down selection of the colors in the color palette. Select a line color preference for lines and line objects (rectangles, ovals, polygons, etc.). The default is blue. 

Line Width Menu: Click on the menu to select a width for drawing object lines. The default is 2 pixels.

Arrows (Line End mark) Palette: Click on the rectangle to display the line end mark palette. Select from the three line-end mark projects: single arrow, double arrow, and plain (no end-mark). These end marks only apply to the straight-line tool. The single arrow end mark is placed at the point where the mouse is released when drawing a line. The default is the single arrow.

[Show Drawings] radio button: Select this radio button to display any saved drawings.

[Hide Drawings] radio button: Select this radio button to hide any displayed drawings.

[Delete All Drawings] button: Click this button to permanently delete all drawings from the frontmost bubble chart.

[Close] button: Select this button to close the toolbar.
