The Portfolio Trend Tracker Form

Form Overview

The Portfolio Baseline Trend Tracker is used to display and analyze the results of portfolio baselines saved over time (Figure 1).

Figure 1

The Portfolio name and prioritization type are displayed in the upper left area of the form. Below this, the form contains a chart for displaying the trends as a line chart and a set of radio buttons, check boxes, and a drop down menu for controlling what data is displayed.

The form contains two list boxes: the left list box displays the SMART Score data for the saved portfolio baseline. Clicking a row in the left list box displays the portfolio's attribute values in the right list box at the time the baseline was snapped. The SMART Score data for that baseline is also displayed in the upper-left area of the form.

Note that the Portfolio baseline data is based on the sum of the project SMART Score and attribute data.

For Simulation-Prioritization portfolios, a thumbnail button of the SMART Score distribution for the portfolio selected in the left list box is displayed in the upper right of the form. Clicking on that button displays a larger picture of the distribution.

Clicking an Attribute row in the right list box displays the trend for that Attribute in the chart area (Figure 2). Clicking the [View SMART Score Trend] returns to charting the left listbox data.

The Change Indicators

The change indicators are visual indicators that a project value has changed outside of a user-specified range compared to the baseline. This allows you to quickly determine which projects have changed outside your specified limits.

When a change exceeds a minor or major change limit, the Portfolio Trend Tracker form field an arrow next to the baseline or attribute indicating the type of change (major or minor) by the color and the direction of the change (positive or negative) by the direction. (Figure 3)

Portfolio Trend Tracker Display Controls

These buttons and controls are enabled or disabled depending on several parameters:

  • The type or prioritization used: The statistical data is only enabled for Simulation-Prioritization portfolios
  • If the data displayed in the chart is SMART Score data (left list box) or attribute data (right listbox
  • Uncertainty tracking is being used for the portfolio

[Mean] or [Mean of Sums] radio button: When this button is selected, the chart displays the mean value for the portfolio baseline selected in the left or right list box:

  • For portfolios prioritized using the Simulation-Prioritization, it displays the mean of SMART Score sums from the simulation of the selected data.
  • For portfolios prioritized not using Simulation-Prioritization or for Attributes (right list box), it displays the mean of the individual project values for the selected data.

No. of Sigmas pop-up menu: This menu lets you select the number of sigmas (standard deviations) that you want to display as bars in the chart. This menu is only enabled when the [Mean] radio button has been selected; otherwise it is disabled.

[Median] or [Median of Sums] radio button: When this button is selected, the chart displays the median value value for the portfolio baseline selected in the left or right list box:

  • For portfolios prioritized using the Simulation-Prioritization, it displays the median of SMART score sums from the simulation of the selected data.
  • For portfolios prioritized not using Simulation-Prioritization or for Attributes (right list box), it displays the median of the inidividual project values for the selected data.

[Show 90% and 10% Bars] check box: This checkbox is only enabled when the [Median] radio button has been selected; otherwise it is disabled. When this checkbox is selected, the 90% and 10% bars are displayed in the baseline chart.

[Sum] radio button: When this button is selected, the chart displays the sum value value for the portfolio attribute data selected in the right list box:

  • For portfolios prioritized using the Simulation-Prioritization, it is disabled for the SMART Score data (left list box) and enabled for the attribute data (right list box)
  • For portfolios prioritized not using Simulation-Prioritization, it is enabled for both the SMART Score data (left list box) and for the attribute data (right list box)

[Number of Projects] radio button: When this button is selected, the chart displays the number of projects in the portfolio at the time the baseline was snapped.

[Max-Min] check box: When this check box is selected, the chart displays vertical lines representing the maximum and minimum values for the selected data. This button is disabled if uncertainty tracking is off or there is no "maximum-minimum" data to display in the chart.

[Display Baseline Numbers] check box: When this checkbox is selected, baseline numbers corresponding to the values in the "No." column in the right list box are displayed along the X-axis of the baseline chart.

[Thumbnail Picture] button: This button is displayed in the in the upper right corner of the form if the portfolio was prioritized using the Simulation-Prioritization. It displays the thumbnail of the actual distribution associated with the portfolio baseline selected in the right list box. Clicking on the thumbnail image displays the larger image in the form.

Viewing All The Attribute and Baseline List Box Columns

The form can be widened by dragging the side to display all the columns of the the attribute list box:

Clicking [Hide Attribute List] hides the Attribute List Box and expands the baseline list box:

Portfolio Trend Tracker Buttons

[View SMART Score Trend]: This button is enabled if a row in the right list box has been selected. Click on this button to return to and chart the left list box data.

[Hide/View Attribute List]: Click this button to hide or display the right list box.

[Delete] button: Select this button to delete the baseline corresponding to the selected row in the left listbox. This action action be undone.

[Close]: Click on this button to close the form.

Viewing Project Baselines and Trends: You can snap baselines for individual projects and view them in the Project Trend Tracker form.
